{"id":1675,"date":"2020-11-04T17:24:31","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T17:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/?p=1675"},"modified":"2020-11-04T17:24:31","modified_gmt":"2020-11-04T17:24:31","slug":"tokyo-olympics-2020-hsieh-ruled-ineligible-for-tokyo-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/?p=1675","title":{"rendered":"Tokyo Olympics 2020: Hsieh ruled ineligible for Tokyo Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/sport\/archives\/2020\/10\/30\/2003746035\">Taipei Times<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>APPEAL REJECTED: Hsieh had not shown sufficient commitment to competitions, the ITF said, citing her absence from the Fed Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games<\/i><\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hsieh su-wei.jpg\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/media\/images2\/hsieh su-wei.jpg\" alt=\"hsieh su-wei.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\"><b><i>Taiwan\u2019s Hsieh Su-wei reacts during her women\u2019s singles first-round tennis match against Austria\u2019s Barbara Haas at the French Open in Paris on Sept 28<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s chance to win a medal in tennis at the Tokyo Olympic Games suffered a major blow after women\u2019s doubles world No. 1 Hsieh Su-wei was ruled ineligible for the Games by the sport\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n<p>The 34-year-old Hsieh announced in a Facebook post that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had rejected her appeal to gain eligibility for next year\u2019s COVID-19-delayed Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh said that even though her ranking qualified her for the Games, she was deemed ineligible due to \u201ca mistake involving the Fed Cup\u201d held in March.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh is ranked No. 66 in women\u2019s singles and No. 1 in women\u2019s doubles. Players ranked among the top 56 in singles and top 10 in doubles are eligible to compete at the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Although ranked outside the top 56 in singles, Hsieh\u2019s ranking would have been enough to gain her entry into the singles draw, as no more than four players from the same country can qualify.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>However, a player must take part in at least two Fed Cup events during the Olympic cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh was to represent Taiwan in the Fed Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in early March, but she ended up leaving without playing a match.<\/p>\n<p>Defending her decision to leave, Hsieh wrote in her Facebook post that she had informed her coach before the competition that she would not be able to complete the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>That decision and her withdrawal from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after a blowup with a tennis official weighed heavily in the ITF\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association (CTTA) on Oct. 14 \u2014 made public by Hsieh on Facebook \u2014 the ITF said that it deemed Hsieh ineligible for the Tokyo Games because she did not demonstrate sufficient commitment to competitions.<\/p>\n<p>The letter specifically cited her absence from the Fed Cup and that she did not compete in the 2016 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>The ITF said that Hsieh had withdrawn on the morning of the first day of play in the Rio Games without providing sufficient information to justify her withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh has had 10 career Fed Cup nominations and one Olympic appearance, according to ITF records.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh said that she pulled out from the singles and doubles in Rio after a heated argument with a Taiwanese delegation official, but she chose not to tell the ITF to avoid airing dirty laundry in public.<\/p>\n<p>The Taiwanese tennis ace in August announced that she would not compete again this year citing an ankle injury and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Hsieh\u2019s highest ranking in the singles was No. 23 on Feb. 25, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In winning the 2013 Wimbledon women\u2019s doubles title with Chinese partner Peng Shuai, she became the first player from Taiwan to win a Grand Slam of any kind.<\/p>\n<p>She has three career Grand Slam doubles titles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from Taipei Times APPEAL REJECTED: Hsieh had not shown sufficient commitment to competitions, the ITF said, citing her absence from the Fed Cup and the 2016 Olympic GamesTaiwan\u2019s Hsieh Su-wei reacts during her women\u2019s singles first-round tennis match against Austria\u2019s Barbara Haas at the French Open in Paris on Sept 28 Taiwan\u2019s chance to win [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1675","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1675","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1675"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1675\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1676,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1675\/revisions\/1676"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1675"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1675"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1675"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
