{"id":1385,"date":"2020-08-04T15:23:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T15:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/?p=1385"},"modified":"2020-08-04T15:23:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T15:23:13","slug":"chinese-state-media-warns-against-us-smash-and-grab-theft-of-tiktok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbmv.com\/blog\/?p=1385","title":{"rendered":"Chinese State Media Warns Against US &#8216;Smash And Grab&#8217; Theft Of Tiktok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>written by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/510417-chinese-state-media-warns-against-us-smash-and-grab-theft-of-tiktok\">Justine Coleman<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"tiktok.jpg\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/media\/images2\/tiktok.jpg\" alt=\"tiktok.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\"><\/p>\n<p>Chinese state media late Monday warned against what it called the U.S.\u2019s \u201ctheft\u201d of the social media app TikTok, cautioning that Beijing may retaliate.<\/p>\n<p>The English-language China Daily newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/global.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202008\/03\/WS5f2810e3a31083481725de72.html\">published an editorial<\/a> which highlighted China\u2019s toughest protection of TikTok yet and cautioned that Beijing may block the sale of TikTok to American company Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina will by no means accept the \u2018theft\u2019 of a Chinese technology company, and it has plenty of ways to respond if the administration carries out its planned smash and grab,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n<p>The state-run newspaper said it \u201cmight be preferable\u201d for TikTok\u2019s parent company ByteDance to sell the U.S. business, but the editorial called the U.S. effort to buy the app a \u201csmash and grab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith competitiveness now dependent on the ability to collect and use data, it offers an either-or choice of submission or mortal combat in the tech realm,\u201d the China Daily said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chinese officials have been known to use the editorial page of the China Daily to send messages to U.S. and other Western officials, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-08-04\/china-won-t-allow-a-tiktok-smash-and-grab-state-media-warns\">Bloomberg News noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump and several American lawmakers have expressed concerns about TikTok\u2019s ties to China accusing it of sending users\u2019 data to the Chinese government, which TikTok has denied.<\/p>\n<p>The president announced Monday that any sale involving TikTok must designate a portion of the payment to the Department of Treasury and be completed by Sept. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, a tabloid run by the party\u2019s People\u2019s Daily newspaper, accused the U.S. of \u201copen robbery\u201d calling it a \u201crogue country\u201d on Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is an open robbery. The article also referenced the U.S.\u2019s banning of Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications company.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei and ByteDance have \u201cbrought a sense of crisis to U.S. elites, which shows that China\u2019s top companies have the ability to move to the forefront of the world in technology,\u201d the Global Times said in the piece.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the potential sale to Bloomberg News, but spokesman Wang Wenbin repeated China\u2019s claims that the U.S. was overreaching its power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf following the wrong example set by U.S., every country could use national security as an excuse to target American companies,\u201d Wang said during a news briefing, according to Bloomberg News. \u201cThe U.S. should not \u2026 open a Pandora\u2019s box, otherwise it will swallow the bitter fruit itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration threatened a ban on TikTok in the U.S. over the weekend, prompting Microsoft to begin negotiations with ByteDance to buy and keep the app running in the U.S. The president indicated he supported the deal during a Monday press conference, as long as the Sept. 15 deadline is met.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>written by Justine Coleman Chinese state media late Monday warned against what it called the U.S.\u2019s \u201ctheft\u201d of the social media app TikTok, cautioning that Beijing may retaliate.
