Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) resigned from the board of directors of the Christian organization Bread for the World amid blowback after he accosted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) this week at the Capitol and called her \u201cdisgusting\u201d and a \u201cfucking bitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan organization, which targets hunger and poverty around the world, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bread.org\/news\/bread-world-accepts-rep-ted-yohos-resignation-its-board-directors\">Saturday statement<\/a> that it sought Yoho\u2019s resignation, calling his actions \u201cnot reflective of the ethical standards expected of members of our Board of Directors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBread for the World met with Rep. Yoho on Friday and he has resigned from the board of Bread. During that conversation, we reaffirmed our joint commitment to expanding opportunity for men, women, and children around the world and thanked Rep. Yoho for his commitment to foreign aid effectiveness and transparency,\u201d the organization said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these areas of agreement, Bread sought his resignation as an action that reaffirms our commitment to coming alongside women and people of color, nationally and globally, as they continue to lead us to a more racially inclusive and equitable world,\u201d the statement continued.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/508259-ocaasio-cortez-accosted-by-gop-lawmaker-over-remarks-that-kind-of\">heated Monday exchange<\/a>, Yoho approached Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the east side of the Capitol. Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez that she was \u201cdisgusting\u201d for suggesting that poverty and unemployment could be driving a spike in crime in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez told the GOP lawmaker that he was being \u201crude\u201d before the lawmakers parted ways. Yoho said \u201cf&#8211;king bitch\u201d as he descended the steps.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bread.org\/news\/bread-world-statement-regarding-rep-ted-yohos-verbal-attack-rep-ocasio-cortez\">Thursday statement<\/a> that it was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about Yoho\u2019s comments \u201cand what we and others perceive to be his non-apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yoho <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/508488-yoho-apologizes-after-confrontation-with-ocasio-cortez\">apologized Wednesday<\/a> for the \u201cabrupt manner\u201d in which he confronted Ocasio-Cortez. He denied directing the profanity at his the Democratic lawmaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving been married for 45 years with two daughters, I&#8217;m very cognizant of my language,&#8221; Yoho said on the House floor. &#8220;The offensive name-calling words attributed to me by the press were never spoken to my colleagues, and if they were construed that way, I apologize for the misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cI cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my God, my family and my country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez later <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/508501-ocasio-cortez-wont-accept-yoho-apology-hes-refusing-responsibility\">refused to accept Yoho\u2019s apology<\/a>, tweeting that \u201cRepublican responds to calling a colleague \u201cdisgusting\u201d &amp; a \u201cf\u2014ing b*tch\u201d w\/ \u201cI cannot apologize for my passion\u201d and blaming others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not teach my nieces and young people watching that this an apology, and what they should learn to accept,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Republican responds to calling a colleague \u201cdisgusting\u201d &amp; a \u201cf\u2014ing b*tch\u201d w\/ \u201cI cannot apologize for my passion\u201d and blaming others.<\/p>\n<p>I will not teach my nieces and young people watching that this an apology, and what they should learn to accept.<\/p>\n<p>Yoho is refusing responsibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BKzJa7KUBW\">https:\/\/t.co\/BKzJa7KUBW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1285963001326178304?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The freshman lawmaker from New York also reiterated similar comments on the House floor Thursday, denouncing Yoho&#8217;s statement from the same place the day before.
